I’ve been using those little bottles of Bella Sera pinot grigio for cooking, like for risotto. I’ve tasted it, it’s very drinkable. And the best part is that you don’t have to open a whole bottle just to get 1 cup. I don’t use chardonnay since lately it’s too ‘buttery’ in taste. I need crisp and clean tastes for a white. And I agree, chablis would work just as well.
Not sure if this is good for cooking, but for drinking, I HIGHLY recommend JM Fonseca Twin Vines. Tried it about a month ago, and, as a white wine lover, been having a glass for dinner every night with my wife. The link below is the homepage to the wine. Give it a try. and I guess you can try to cook with it, but for drinking, its very good.
Chablis is good table wine that is commonly used for cooking also. There is a Chablis for every price point, too, so take your pick at your local wine shop.

I like white zin cause it is sweeter that sherry, or Chardonnay is what most bars and restaurants use.
