Wine Glasses,What is the typical amount of wine glasses to have on hand? We have place settings for up to 12 but I’m not sure if 12 wine glasses are necessary. The ones we’re looking to purchase would be great for both red or white wine. Thanks!

If the ones you are looking at are the huge ones, consider how much space they are going to take up in your cabinet before you buy. If I were going to buy a matching set of 12 I would go for small ones, but I would never do that because even if I managed to host a dinner party for 12 people, there is no way all 12 of them would be drinking wine because I just don’t know that many wine drinkers.

If you have 12 place settings why not go ahead and order 12 wine glasses also? You could try ordering only 8 and hopefully that would be enough.

If you have place settings for 12 you must be expecting to have twelve people over for dinner at some point. Imagine YOUR embarrassment when four guests don’t have wine glasses because you didn’t get all twelve. If anything I would oder more than is needed. You will inevitably break one or two and what if you want have different wines with different courses?
I would order at least 12 glasses.

Always be prepared for the "unthinkable". Like already mentioned, you should definitely have at least as many on hand as you have place settings…
Even if you don’t *plan* to have 12 people over for a wine/dinner party, you never know when it will happen, when you will break one or 2, or when someone wants both red & white wine…

I would get 12 unless there is a firm expectation that the brand and type will still be available in the future. The glassware that we received for our wedding has been discontinued so we can’t get more. I am clumsy and have broken 3 already. If storage space is an issue then go to http://www.stacksofracks.com and make your guests jealous while letting your cabinets breathe.
