No such thing as the best wine only because everyone’s sense of taste varies. There are some agreements and for those you can start with Wine Spectator or Wine Enthusiast. They are good starting points to learn a bit about wines, regions, etc. Older does not necessarily mean better. Some wines are not made for aging (especially the high alcohol and very cheap wines) others are. Plus you never know how one wine will age against another – one bottle may be corked, another turned to vinegar, while another be wonderful, most will change color and get darker or even brown.
Visit wineries in your area – there are wineries in every state these days, so there is bound to be one in your vicinity. Join a local wine club or frequent a wine shop (many will offer tastings and advice).
As for storage, you cannot store them in your refrigerator nor closest nor garage, especially if you are looking at long term storage. Invest in a wine cabinet – they come a few as 20 bottle capacity and upward of several hundred.

Sometimes there are Wineries around where you can either walk in or set up an appointment to do some sampling (often seen for Weddings). Remember, if you are going for quality, the OLDER the BETTER!! And just for some basic knowledge about corking…Did you know, that is why wine is stored on it’s side? Unless the cork has constant contact with moisture, it will decinagrate and fall apart allowing the wine to leak out or evapporate. Therefore, laying the bottle on its side allows the wine to keep the cork moist enough to stay intact. : ) PeaceOut

Try to focus on different wines from different parts of the world, I also always try to find those wines that aren’t so "popular" but are excellent – like the San Sebastiano …http://www.my-italy-piedmont-marche-and-more.com/italian-ice-wine.html
